Important Exams to Undertake to Study In USA

Planning to study in USA? Then it is worth noting that most graduate programs in the USA require students to take standardized tests like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, GMAT, GRE, and SAT. Scoring well in these exams will open gates for international students. The universities in the United States have established their own admission requirement to judge students’ eligibility and the ability for admission. Many universities across the country recognize these tests. By taking these tests, students also qualify for loans for higher studies. Also, the scores of these exams decide the students’ eligibility for visas and scholarships.

Tip for students: Students should take these exams 12-18 months prior to the date they plan to study in USA. This time frame is recommended as students may want to take these tests more than once to improve their scores.

TOFEL iBT

TOEFL-iBT is a standardized test to measure students’ ability to use and understand English at the university level. It evaluates how well students combine their reading, writing and speaking skills for academics. It is managed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). It is considered as one of the major parameters for admission in the United States.

IELTS: International English Language Testing System (IELTS) certificate is recognized by many educational institutions in the USA as an evidence of proficiency in English.  There are two editions of IELTS:

IELTS Academic: It is suitable for entry into the USA to study at Bachelors and Masters Level. It is the test to assess whether a student is ready to begin studying in an English speaking country that reflects highly in academic study.

IELTS General Training: It is suitable for non-academic training and for those who wish to migrate to the United States. This edition focuses on basic survival skills in a social and workplace setting.

GMAT
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) measures quantitative, writing, spoken and reading capabilities of a student who wants to get admission to a graduate management program like MBA in the USA. Business schools created this test for business schools. Top universities in USA accept GMAT scores. It is a computer adaptive test and the score is assessed from 200-800. This exam is divided into four parts: analytical writing assessment, integrated reasoning, the quantitative section, and the verbal section.

GRE:
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a test taken by all the prospective graduate applicants who are interested in pursuing Masters, MBA, doctoral degree, specialized Master research degree in the United States. The GRE scores are used by admissions and fellowship panels in addition to undergraduate records, recommendation letters for graduate-level courses.  GRE evaluate students on the basis of the verbal reasoning, analytical writing quantitative reasoning, logical writing and critical thinking capabilities of the students.

SAT
SAT is a standardized test taken for admission at colleges in the United States. It consists of multiple-choice and an essay to evaluate the skills a student developed in school and the ability to apply to those skills. The SAT scores range from 600-2400, distributed into three sections- reading, writing, and mathematics plus an optional essay. Students interested in applying to a 4-year undergraduate program at a university in the United States are required to take the SAT.  These scores help universities to make informed admission decisions.
