Things to Know Before Writing the College Admission Essay

Getting admission to a prestigious college is every student’s dream, especially when it comes to another country.  So to be unique and outstanding from the other applicants, it is very important for a student to write his college admission essay in an entirely different manner. , and not everyone is lucky to get through the admission process. The foreign institutes as such look for something unique and novel in a student.

Things to know before writing the college admission essay

There are some things that the student should keep in mind while writing an admission essay:

1.    Be you!

It’s essential for the students to showcase their own skills and talents as it makes them unique from other applicants. Every student has their personal experiences, thoughts, and opinions that they should pen down in their application to stand out.  The student does not have to write about all the extracurricular activities in detail as it’s already been described in the resume.  Authenticity and being down to earth would make the admissions officer see something special in the student.

2.    Get the hang of the topic

The student should understand the topic carefully and try to make out what the officer wants him to write about.  The essay should be written in a way that is easy to comprehend. It’s better to write in paragraphs explaining each point in detail. The paragraphs should be woven well enough so that the essay is coherent and not submitted in chunks.

3.    Planning

Plan your essay well to avoid any kind of omissions and mistakes in it. Planning makes everything seems clear and specific. Students should understand all parts of the essay topic, then write down the important points and brainstorm upon them.  It will save on a lot of time and panic before submission of the application. Make an outline to incorporate all the necessary points.

4.    Don’t overemphasize

Being real is what is required of you and not inflating your achievements.  Overemphasizing about the accolades or awards won’t do anything good for the student. Mention only those achievements that can be shown with authentic proof.

5.    Vocabulary

To stand out, students usually use synonyms of simple words in the article. This is an excellent thing to do as it shows your skills of using good vocabulary. But make sure the words that are being used also go with the meaning and the sentence.  As some words have the same meaning but aren’t suited for a particular sentence.  Too much usage of uncommon words can make your paragraph difficult to read and also it won't appeal to the officer.

6.    Short and crisp

Usually, a lot of universities have a specified word limit, and a student should adhere to the limit. Don’t exceed the word limit over 1000 words as it becomes a time-consuming process for the officer to read the whole of your essay.  So, it’s advisable to keep the essay short and crisp, highlighting the important and required information.

7.    Proofread

After completing the essay, proofreading is one important step to do. This helps in finding the mistakes if there are any. Check the word count, grammar and the spellings to be as explicit as it can be.  And it’s better to take help from friends, counselors, and parents for the improvement of the essay. After reading the essay carefully, the student is all set to send it to the admission officer.
